I am in Brussels today and looking foward to the delights that await. I must say the beer here truly deserves its own separate blog. I think it is my favorite beer in the world. You have the Leffe, the Grimbergen and, my personal favorite, the Delirium Tremens (sorry no pics). But alas, this is a food blog. I arrive with Sharon and the Daps at the Ancienne Belgique where a dedicated trio of chefs prepare us lunch and dinner. I am excited to see little Kaiser rolls sitting at the buffet table. Not only that, but what looks to be chicken salad (and is later confirmed to be turkey salad) is taunting me as well. This is “Homer comfort food”–mini turkey salad sandwichs. The turkey has got chunks of turkey, mayo, celery, maybe some other stuff, and sweetened apricots (not sure if it is apricot preserve, or canned or what). The first sandwich I make is simple — turkey salad and bread — delicious. On return to the buffet station, I am saddened by empty bread basket. Not to worry; One of the chef sees my dismay and simply asks, “do you want me to bake more bread?”. I can’t believe it. She just throws the bread into the oven, and, 8 minutes later, we not only have mini kaiser rolls, but toasty fresh baked ones. This time I get a little more serious. I take a piece of sliced cheese, a nice scoop of turkey salad, some roasted peppers and lettuce and mount it all on the roll (pictured above). It is accompanied by a curried coleslaw, which i did not care for.
